Romeria is one of New York City's pick pockets. Until she picks the wrong pocket and finds herself working for a notorious crime boss. While on a job she meets a woman names Sofia, who kills the boss to secure her services by swordpoint.
Romeria's new quest is to retrieve a stone from a sacred garden in Islor's. She is not to let anyone discover her true identity because they would surely kill her. Sounds like a typical job. Sofia drives something into her chest and plunges her into a realm of waring thrones, and magic. She soon finds out she has assumed the body of the princess of Ybarsan, whose name is also Romeria. She is immediately tossed into the cell tower for crimes she is completely unaware of. Before taking over the body, the princess viciously murdered the King and Queen of Islor. Their son Zander has assumed the throne and she soon finds out she was to marry him. Zander decides to use her to flush out her other conspirators. The two end up working together to find out what has happening and in time uncover a deeper, darker conspiracy than either would have ever expected. I have to be vaguer than usual because of the way the book is written. Giving away one detail would unravel too much too soon. That being said this book drove me crazy! I can't even honestly say I liked or I didn't. There is a lot of fluff in places but nearing the end when the truth is revealed. I was honestly angry at myself for not paying closer attention to the beginning. It's a slow burn and I don't really like that, but I really does work for this story. This is the first book of the Fate and Flame series and I do intend to read more.
