Celaena Sardothien, the world's most notorious assassin is pulled from the mine she been toiling away in since her capture. The crown Prince has claimed her as his champion to be entered in a competition held by his father. The winner of the competition is offered a contract and named the King's Champion.
Celaena is told to hide her identity from the other twenty-three competitors, consisting of murders, thieves, warriors, and other assassins. When the competition begins so do the competitor murders. If Celaena can win she will sign the contract, serve the king for four years and finally regain her freedom. In order to win, she needs to survive. With the help of the Captain of the Guard, assigned by the Prince to train her, they begin investigating the murders. Celaena must balance the competition, the investigation and keeping up her new identity with the people around her. In a world that has outlawed magic the last thing she expected to find, has her in its sights and is coming to kill her. There are several ways to start this series. This happened to be the one I chose to start with and I really enjoyed it. It keeps you going back and forth. Will she go for the the Crown Prince, or the Captain of the Guard?
